In this controversial film loosely based on true events, Ryan Gosling, in an excellent performance, plays Danny, who comes from a Jewish family but denounces the religion and now is a Neo-Nazi. He goes to a fascist meeting headed by Curtis Zampf (Billy Zane)and tells of his plan to kill Jews and how everybody, deep down hates them, he claims. His theories, though completely wrong are very articulately spoken. I am part Jewish though not really religiously, but I thought the film was powerful, and although some of the characters denounce Judaism, including Carla (Summer Phoenix) the movie certainly does not. Despite a low budget and some corny scenes, overall a powerful movie. Although it will inevitably draw comparisons to American History X, this film doesn't deal so much with racism as much as with religion.
