During the Second World War, Italy invades and conquers Greece, and Captain Antonio Corelli commands the Italian forces on the island of Cephalonia. A friendly officer with a mandolin, he moves in with the village doctor, whose daughter Pelagia slowly warms to him after her boyfriend goes off to the war. Corelli becomes part of the island's life, and when in 1943 Italy changes sides in the war, he has to defend Cephalonia against a German invasion. As the fighting comes closer, Corelli and Pelagia have to choose between their countries and their feelings for each other.The movie is based on a novel by Louis de Bernières.
