High-powered attorney Gavin Banek and recovering alcoholic Doyle Gipson are both on their way to the courthouse when they have a fender-bender on New York’s FDR Drive. Banek writes Gipson a check, speeds off, and leaves Gipson with a disabled car and no way to make it to the courthouse on time. Gipson arrives late for his court hearing and loses custody of his two sons. Also at the courthouse, Banek discovers that he’s misplaced a very important file that he must find or else face possible jail time. Gipson has the file, but refuses to return it because he blames Banek for making him lose custody of his sons. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between the two men as each tries to destroy the other’s life in order to get what he wants: Banek wants his file back; Gipson wants his children back. Banek hires a computer hacker to bankrupt Gipson in order to force him to return the file, and when Gipson learns of this, he sabotages Banek’s car and then watches as it crashes on the FDR. At the end of the day, though, both men realize they’re only destroying themselves by their actions and they make amends with each other. Gipson returns the file and Banek convinces Gipson’s ex-wife to give Gipson another chance to prove he’s a good father.
