Today was the first time that I have watched Down Periscope in a few years and I have to say that I forgot how good it is. What I love about the movie is how Kelsey Grammer did a great job playing the rather quirky Lieutenant Commander Tom Dodge and the lengths he and his crew went to in the War Games maneuvering to defeat the rather cocky Rear Admiral Graham.

As the storyline in the movie progresses, it was neat to learn a little bit of the background of Lt. Cmdr. Dodge and the reasoning why he was never taken serious after botched war game maneuvering with a Russian sub a few years before.

Besides that, what really made the movie hilarious were the sailors Graham picked out to be Dodge’s crew; what a bunch of misfits. It was funny the way XO Pascal thought he was the favorite officer in charge on the sub, even though everybody couldn’t stand him.

When the movie drew to a close, it was great the way Lt. Cmdr. Dodge and his crew of unpolished sailors beat Rear Admiral Graham badly in the war games that he designed. What was nice to see how the crew of the U.S.S. Stingray finally got the respect they didn’t have before the maneuvers started.

In the end, I really loved watching Down Periscope. I don’t know why I waited so long in watching the movie again because I forgot how funny it was. If you haven’t seen it yet, I would recommend checking it out the next time it is on television.
