Eight years earlier a British movie came out with Amanda Plummer in the lead role called Butterfly Kisses. Monster is what Butterfly Kisses should have been. Not that these two films are really comparable, as one deals with a woman scorn and through shame, anger, and severe pain she turns to murder as a way to control herself, while the other is about a woman so far in left field that she's almost not even human. And that is where butterfly kisses fails.
Monster on the other hand, gives us reason for the existence of the characters in this little window of pain. And the superb acting of Charlize Theron as the destructive murderer Aileen Wuornos makes even the hardest heart suffer the terrible fate of her victims and that of her own self destruction. It's a little to real and hard to watch.
Some might be turned off by the love affair aspect, but really this is the best part as both characters are so messed up that it is terribly painful to watch them hash out their failures.
Christina Ricci is believable and human, which is a nice place for her to be. I hope she gets more rolls like this, where she can play someone with depth.
The direction is well paced and full of the convoluted confusion I believe Patty Jenkings was going for. Gritty and ugly life in middle America.
If you can stomach this kind of movie it's worth the watch.
