Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson) is paroled from prison after serving nineteen years of hard labor for stealing food. After reforming and becoming the mayor and head businessman in a small town, his past life comes back to haunt him as his true identity is discovered by a former prison guard, now a policeman, Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush). Soon Fantine (Uma Thurman) dies traumatically, leaving a note stating that Valjean takes custody of her daughter, Cosette. After rescuing young Cosette from an evil couple, they headed to Paris and lived in a church for several years until Inspector Javert finally discovers him once again.
