The triumphs and tragedies of Oliver Twist are brought to life again in musical form. His mother dying during childbirth, Oliver spends his first 10 years or so in an orphanage until the day he draws the short straw and dares to ask the Cook for 'more' gruel. Discarded from the orphanage he ends up on the streets and meets a young pickpocket, The Artful Dodger, who introduces him to his 'employer' Fagin, and the other boys he has 'taken' under his wing. On his first pickpocketing job, Oliver is caught and put to a terrifying trial, where his intended victim takes pity on him and offers to take him in. However, Fagin and his co-hort Bill Sykes have other ideas for young Oliver and seek to kidnap and ransom him off.
