This movie is hilarous all the way through, especially the antics John Candy gets up to! This is a movie I'd definately recommend to watch at thanksgiving(and maybe even Christmas due to it's heartwarming ending).

Hughes was at the pinnacle of his movie making career with this fantastic 80's comedy, full of hilarious comic scenes and a background heart-warming story. It’s a tale of how odd ends meet, a tale of the importance of civilization, and a tale of how family and friends are essentially priceless. Planes trains and automobiles is a timeless classic, and it should not be missed. The film starts with Neil page (Steve Martin) and Del griffin (John Candy) attempting to get home in time for thanksgiving dinner; although, as always, things are never so simple. While reading this your probably thinking; "how can this be such a good movie", "how can getting home for thanksgiving be so entertaining", and even “this storyline couldn’t possibly justify 90 minutes of film". Well if you dismissed Hughes in such way, you’ be completely wrong. This film perhaps shouldn’t work, its genre appears dry, and the actors appear unsuitable. All these prejudgments are completely wrong. It would be so easy to destroy this genre as others have. However, Hughes has earned substantial credibility from past work. Lets not forget his role in "the breakfast club" were detention had never been so much fun. Planes Trains and Automobiles is successful, partially because Hughes uses the slow burn approach, squeezing all possible relevance out of the locations, whereby comedy is obtained from the most basic props. Hughes has obviously done his research, focusing on key transport areas known to frustrate commuters; such as weather delays, technical discrepancies, and rude and impatient Taxi drivers.

In addition to the superb directing and storytelling from Hughes, there is substantial credibility to be found in the acting. Candy and Martin play completely contrasting characters, and this conflict makes up a substantial portion of the film. Del (candy) is a character of a clumsy, cuddly loud mouth, who although admittedly annoying at first, develops into a caring and strong character, and is portrayed by Candy effectively. Del’s life is not as it seems, and various clues are hinted throughout the film, however, unfortunately I found it to be somewhat predictable. Neil (Martin) is one of the opposite; a self reliant, proud and heavily educated professional, who fails to bond with Candy, except where cooperation prevails. The film prevails given its mass attention from Hughes, the convincing portrayals from both Martin and Candy, and the fantastic presentation, with a superb musical backing. Its story is one of substantial humor with a light heart warming twist. It is a holiday classic to say the least, and one which should not be missed. ****

This was excellent! Steve Martin is one of my favourite actors and in this comedy, we really get to see some of his best stuff. This is a hilarious must see.
