Quite possibly Disney's most politically correct animated film ever made (and the only one so far to be based on historical fact) this film seeks to undo centuries of unfair stereotyping by presenting the native Americans as they were, how they lived, and what they believed in. An Algonquin tribe led by the great chief Powhattan for the most part knows only peace and only uses force if there is no other recourse. He has a daughter named Pocahontas, who is very different from her father. She goes whereever the wind takes her. Pocahontas has had a fantastic vision of something very unusual even by her tribe's standards. Powhattan wants his daughter to follow a safe path with a strong husband. But Pocahontas wants to choose her own path. Powhattan sees the river as smooth and steady. But Pocahontas sees the river as changing and always flowing. When she comes to a fork in the river and a choice between a smooth course or a wild mountain stream, Pocahontas chooses the latter choice which is a symbol reflecting the course her life will lead. Pocahontas sees a spinning arrow in her dreams that is pointing her down her path. But even stranger is when she sees what looks like strange clouds to her, not knowing that they are the gigantic sails from the British ship docking there. Neither Pocahontas nor a British adventurer named John Smith know that they are heading for a meeting of destiny. The British settlers have been tempted with the promise of gold in the new world, even though the Algonquins have seen nothing of the sort. When Pocahontas and John Smith first meet each other, neither knows what to say or do. What does one say to a person of an ethnicity they've never met before? Yet Pocahontas listens with her heart, and senses John Smith's good intentions. He only wants to make her tribe's way of living a better one not realizing the way the Algonquin's live is perfectly fine for them. Even as the rift between the British and the Native Americans widen, John Smith's and Pocahontas' love for each other grows only deeper. John Smith learns that the land of Virginia itself provides greater richers than non-existant gold could ever bring, and maybe some-place where John could finally belong. But the only way their love could ever be is if the two worlds stop clashing with each other and find a way to co-exist. But when Powhattan threatens to end John Smith's life with a club, Pocahontas must find the courage to follow her path even if it's not the easiest one and stop a war from erupting & killing many lives. Pocahontas stops the war before it even starts, but there is still one casualty of a sense-less act on Governor Ratcliffe's part. John Smith has been shot and his only chance for survival is to go back to Britain and get treated for his gun-shot wound. Pocahontas and John Smith don't know what's going to happen now, but one thing's for sure. Neither world is ever going to be the same again! Enough said, true believers! ;)
