In the late 1920's, with her Russian homeland attacked, young Suzie is alone in England, after her father flees and her grandmother sends her off. Not knowing that Suzie is alive, her family gives up hope of finding her. Suzie is sent to live at an orphanage where she is an outcast. When she gets older, Suzie joins a singing and dancing group to earn money to find her father in America. She is sent to Paris to work where she meets a fellow dancer and singer, Lola (Cate Blanchett), whom she befriends quickly. Lola seems to follow the rich men, and they her. Suzie again feels like an outcast and befriends a gypsy man, Cesar (Johnny Depp), who shows her that living life is much better than living life for others to gain money. When Paris is invaded by the Germans, choices on their new friendship must be made.
