I have a soft spot for this movie, so be warned, my review may reveal it. Use the appropriate spear when it is exposed.
This movie has some great metaphor in it, from the fact of the zig zag path of life to the fact that he keeps meeting the same girl: All the women are played by Meg Ryan. We are transported, along with Joe, on this adventure. Is it a love story? Is it a fairy tale? Is it just plain silly? It might be all three in the guise of something simple and entertaining.
The writing is simple, but often times borders on the urbane, like when Patricia (Meg) the captain of the yacht tells Joe, "I'm soul sick" From Joe's perspective she's beautiful, but he's a man believing that he is dying, what care he our tiny errors in the face of beauty, fate, and love? Each step takes us closer to the enviable end: Joe and the volcano. Even, there the waponi whom failed their own destinies must turn to Joe, and try as they might, lead him up that twisted path one more time.
I must again mention the Meg as every women aspect of this movie. I find that very interesting and quit ingenious. Joe meets and re-meets different aspects of the woman he was fated to be with.
This is a touching, silly, film bordering on modern day fairy tale. In the end does Joe finally free himself from fate...or...is his final happy life filled with love and adventure part of the greater cosmic plan?
