This is the story of truth, beauty, freedom, and above all things, love. Christian is a writer who travels to Monmatre at the height of the Bohemian Revolution. One day, an unconscious Argentinean falls through his ceiling in his hotel room. He discovers the people above him are rehearsing a play, “Spectacular, Spectacular.” Soon Christian becomes the writer for the play, and they decide to head to the infamous Moulin Rouge and present it to Satine. Satine, known as The Sparkling Diamond, is the head courtesan of the Moulin Rouge. This is the same night she is supposed to spark up a relationship with the Duke, who can make her a real actress. However, with the help of the Bohemians, Christian ends up with Satine, who thinks this young, handsome man is the Duke. Though after an attempt at a seduction and a reading of Christian’s poetry, Satine falls in love with Christian, only to discover he is not the Duke. The Duke comes up as Satine is trying to get Christian out of her boudoir. She hides Christian and gets the Duke to leave, telling him they must wait to have any relationship until opening night. However, the Duke forgets his hat, and as he returns to Satine’s room to get it, he sees Christian on top of Satine, after the girl passed out. Satine, Christian, and the Bohemians who have been watching cover it up with a rehearsal. Zidler comes running up, and the Duke says he’d like to see the play before he invests in it. The group puts on a song and dance member, and the Duke agrees to it. After this works out, a huge party happens with all the Diamond Dogs, the can-can dancers, at the Moulin Rouge, and the Bohemians. But all Christian can do is focus on Satine. He goes to visit her, and the two end up having a relationship. Their relationship progresses, but they have to hide it. And the Duke is growing anxious to have Satine and is starting to suspect something. He demands he have a supper with Satine and finally have her as his own. Satine starts her seduction, but she refuses him after seeing Christian. The Duke grows mad and tries to force himself on her, but Chocolat saves them. Satine runs to Christian, and he tells his love they will run away together. But as Satine is leaving, Zidler approaches her to tell her how the Duke has grown insanely jealous and plans to kill Christian. She doesn’t care about that, but then Zidler gives her even worse news, something he and Marie have discovered. Satine is dying. Satine goes to Christian, after being told to do so by Zidler, and tells him she doesn’t love him. Christian goes to the Moulin Rouge, only to be turned away and hit. Christian decides to get rid of Satine and any love he has for her. He sells his typewriter and heads to the Moulin Rouge one last time, opening night of his play. The play is going well and is greatly impressing its audience. Christian is hiding from the Duke’s manservant and trying to reach Satine, which he finally does. He tries to pay her, but she tells her there is no use. Christian chases his love while she is trying to reach the stage, and just before any shots ring out, by the Duke’s manservant, Satine and Christian are right behind the doors as they open. When they are revealed to the audience, Zidler covers up what is happening, and Christian throws money at Satine, telling her he has paid his wh*re, and she means nothing to him. As he is heading out, and Satine starts singing their song to him. He joins in with her, and they join each other on stage. The play resumes, but the Duke is upset and tries to get Christian killed. After his manservant fails, he picks up the gun himself, but is punched by Zidler, making the gun fly out the window, hitting the Eiffel Tower. The play ends, and Satine and Christian are finally together. Bu after the curtain closes, Satine begins coughing, and Christian rushes to his love. Satine tells him that she is dying and to go on without her because he has such potential. Christian is holding Satine just as she dies in his arms. A year later, Christian finishes his story about the Moulin Rouge and love, a love that will last a life time.
