If you wanted a David Lean-type film set of the late 20th century set in desert exotica, go for the mastery of "The Wind & The Lion." Milius' take on history is cool, and everything E.P. isn't.

One of the most important films of the decade.
The English Patient is a very good film that reminded me David Lean due to it's style and beautiful cinematography, but with a touch of post-modernistic narrative.
The main plot is about one misterious man, who doesn't remember anything about his past, but through the film, he starts emembering pieces, forcing the viewer to make a puzzle where a story of love, treason and tragedy is revealed, all of it at the inclement deset and the horrifying war.
Ralph Fiennes gives in this film an excellent performance, along with Willem Dafoe, Juliette Binoche and Kristin Scott Thomas who makes this film a very rich in themes and story, all of it thanks to the direction of Anthony Minghella, in what is his best film.
This slow paced movie is specially worth watching for lovers of romance, tragedy and epics; though everyone can enjoy it, it just requires a little patience.
