Benjamin Stone is a cynical young doctor who is driving cross-country to start his new job as a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Trying to avoid a traffic jam, he gets lost and then wrecks his car in a small southern town. In reparation for damages caused by the accident, he is sentenced to 32 hrs of community service at the local hospital. All he wants is to serve the sentence and get moving, but gradually the locals become attached to the new doctor, and he becomes attached to them. And then there's Lou, the town's pretty ambulance driver. Ben starts to re-evaluate his priorities and his life, and it is in this small southern town that he finds out what is really important.
