A wonderful cast. The only reason I liked this movie is the way they worked together. Though the movie could have done better without Jennifer Gray

"Rent It - A sirring battlefield drama set against World War III that suffers from begin a bit obsolete."

I can only imagine how profound this movie seemed in 84. Now while still good, it can only be full taken in by those who lived in those times or students of the Cold War.

That aside it does a great job of making the threat of the communist occupation and the dire times that face our characters. It really brings home the intensity of the battles and raids. I also liked the takes of playing the alternate history to the hilt.

This is easily recommended to fans of Cold War fiction and films of the eighties.

If I were growing up today and saw this movie, would I even get it? Or would I look at the play acting (examples you say? Girls hiding in crawl space acting scared, "don't you cry for me, sons" while they try and cry anyway, etc.), the silly sets, the impossibility of a few high school kids taking on the entire Cuban Army, whom by the way stopped us cold at the bay of pigs. Need I go on? Television shows based on the holocaust or war or even terrorism are so much better than this movie could ever hope to be.
Yet, I have a weakness for it. I was a 14 year American male thinking about joining up. This movie seemed like a god send.
I watch it now and the only ones I empathize with are Powers Boothe when he scolds the kids for 'playing war' or Roy O'Neal, when he's writing a letter home, to his wife. This is a tough sell for me. I'm going to keep my rating at 3 stars, because it is worth it, but I think the real meaning behind this movie is lost on most of us.
