Many years ago, a troll terrorized Briarville, Missouri, turning children into wooden dolls which built him his army. One day, he was captured by the town squire, the ancestor of Ernest P. Worrel, and buried in the roots of an oak tree. Now, years later, Ernest helps some neighborhood kids build a fortress in the same tree, letting the troll loose and free to build his army by stealing children again. Now Ernest must save the town before Halloween night is over with the help of the only remaining witness to the troll's reign of terror on the forefathers of Briarville.
