Richard Attenborough's epic of Indian independence follows the long life of Mohandes K. Ghandi. From his days studying law in London, his life as a young lawyer resisting apartheid in South Africa, through his long campaign of non-violent resistance to the British Empire in his home country to his death at the hands of a Hindu political extremist, we see Gandhi developing his peaceful philosophy and his brilliantly successful campaign against British rule in India. We also see the rapid descent of the sub-continent into the violent upheavals and massacres which followed its partition into the modern states of India and Pakistan and the withdrawal of British forces.
