This movie is like a cross between Ghostbusters and Men In Black, with a little bit of X-Files thrown in for David Duchovny fans (which includes myself). It starts out with two college professors (Duchovny and that guy from the hilarious 7-Up commercials who I can't remember his name) discovering the site of a meteor crashing in the desert. Inside the created cave they find alien organisms that evolve incredibly fast, taking mere hours or days to evolve what would normally take millions of years. As these aliens get increasingly large and dangerous, naturally developing their own ecosystem in the cave, the government inevidibly gets involved, booting out the professors and eventually learning that their control over the aliens is quickly diminishing. Most of the rest of the story is pretty predictable, although the cast and imaginative design of some of the creatures keeps the story going. One thing I didn't like is the fact that most of the comedy in this movie is rather slapstick and at times just plain stupid, such as making the heroine a scientist who is quite clumsy and a bit ditzy (quite a contrast from her portrayal of Agent Clarice Starling in Hannibal). A rather disappointing ending boss creature doesn't help either. Some of the comedy and the acting is good, though, including a cameo appearance by Dan Akroyd as the city mayor. I enjoyed David Duchovny's talk of scientific anomalies and extraterrestrial life. I kept expecting to see Agent Scully come into the room and try to rationalize what was happening with one of her typical lengthy scientific speeches. Although not as good as I hoped it would be, I still enjoyed it due to my David Duchovny/X-Files loyalty. If you liked Ghostbusters, Men In Black, or the previously mentioned TV show, give it a look.

This movie is good fun. They took a questionable movie premise, but intentionally making it funny the scored a hit. There's a great cast and the effects are well done. There are inside jokes and refferences to other sci-fi and horror films that fans of the genre will enjoy. Not a classic but if you want an enjoyable film this is well worth the watch!
