Scott begins receiving weekly letters from Elizabeth wanting to know what his life is like in 1998. He is curious about the civil war life she lived in. As he reads her letter to him he begins to fall in love with her but also senses danger just ahead. Scott keeps these love letters secret from the woman he is about to wed. Deborah eventually wonders if Scott's love for Elizabeth is greater than his love for Deborah. Deborah has trouble understanding why Scott is trying to help a woman that only exists through letters only.
