Ellyn Burstyn won an Academy Award for her work as a bored country housewife with a dream. After the sudden death of her volatile husband, Alice (Burstyn) packs her belongings and with her obnoxious pre-teen son in tow, heads to California to fulfill her dream as a singer. Low on funds, she stops in Arizona, where she lands a waitressing job and meets a handsome albeit insecure cowboy (Kris Krisofferson).
