A most-worthy companion to David Lynch's earlier "Blue Velvet", this one likewise explores a journey into the violent and twisted underbelly of the world around the film's characters. Cage's Sailor is more in control than MacLachlan's Jeffrey, and Dern's Lula is less naive than her Sandy character, but this could almost be a continuation of the same characters from "Blue Velvet"...everyone's just a bit more over-the-top here. It's hard for me to decide which movie has the most despicable character...is it Hopper's Frank Booth or Dafoe's Bobby Peru? Too close for me to make the call.
Despite the expected but still surprising weirdness (such as the "Wizard of Oz" homage)and a descent into situations with characters we'd never want to meet, "Wild At Heart" remains accessible and entertaining for non-Lynch fans. The violent and deranged world of this film is offset by Lynch's brilliant sense of dark humor, and the result is a very satisfying and ultimately optimistic movie, enjoyable by anyone who appreciates more than the standard Hollywood menu.
