Not a complicated film but a good one - and far more interesting than the cartoonish sequel.

While "Alien" degrades a bit in it's last hour (it's mainly hide and seek and chase-like), the premise is good. The ship is desolate and lonely and the alien pods are mysterious. The original attack is startling and weird, and the expectations are more along the line that the creature is more likely to influence the brain and nervous system, not use the host as raw material to grow in a larval state.

Thoughtful and shocking, a good use of the special effects of the time, "Alien" is one of the handful of good science fiction movies from the past 30 some years.

A true classic. Its a must see movie for sure. The story is awsome and the alien coming out of the stomach was just wicked. No matter what you have to see this movie because every thing about it is perfect!

Filmmakers, listen... if you want to make a horror film and want to know how to pace and give the audience the chills... Watch this now... then again...

This is a textbook example of how these things should be made and almost never is.

It also has some very memorable scenes, and the acting and chemistry between the actors feel very natural and their performances are very believable. Sadly it also feels like the movie doesn't really play out any psychological scares (being trapped in a space ship with a monster on board should be enough you would think) but instead resort to cheap scares like many other horror movies such as the "oh, it was just the cat"-cliche... I guess what I'm saying is this movie didn't need to resort to such and would be much better without them. My biggest gripe with the movie is that I knew exactly what was going to happen, and foresee the twists and turns. But I'm not sure I can blame the movie for that because I don't know if this is in the nature of the movie, or because I saw the other movies in the series prior to this one. I heard very good things about this movie so I saved it for last: and that might have been a mistake. I was originally going to give this movie a 3, but when I take into considderation that this is the first movie, not the 5th or however many we're up to now, I pretty much have to recommend this movie. You should totally check it out - and if you do, try not to spoil it by watching the other movies first.
