Woody Allen has made a number of these movies. By these I mean: serious communication films where the main characters ramble on about the endless nature of our lives like a badly written review...oh wait, scratch that last part.
If Annie Hall is the pinnacle of Allen films, Mighty Aphrodite is the plateau just before you reach zenith.
This is a case where Allen lets his other characters take some of the weight of serious dilemma building off of his shoulders and gives up the proverbial reigns.
All of characters are played brilliantly. Miro Sorvino, as Linda, is beautifully cast here. It really is no wonder she won an AA for this.
And the underlying parallel to Oedipus is interesting.
