Evelyn Couch is a housewife in her mid-forties who is trying to make her marriage work. She feels lonely and her overweight makes things much more difficult for her poor self-esteem. One day, when she goes to visit her husband's aunt, she meets Ninny, an old woman who tells her stories from her life in Whistle Stop, her hometown, during the Thirties and the Great Depression.
