By the late 1970s, special effects crews had learned all the ins and outs of latex appliances, puppets, inflatable bladders, gelatin, glycerine and slime and had gone to town on a host of new horror movies. Movies like "Alien" actually used the tools to augment intriguing scripts with weird back stories.

And movies like this simply ripped it off to tell one of a million tales of suspicion of "who's the monster now?" I paid money to watch this film when it came out and was truly disappointed with it's lack of plot (other than who will survive), the poor explanation of the "thing" in somehow having a life cycle where it sprouts multiple slimey heads and split bodies (all to show off special effects rather than advance the story), and lack of any thoughtful resolution. I suppose that I have a hard time accepting the "realistic" set-up of a polar research station where there is a ready-supply of numerous flamethrowers. Well, I accepted it when I realized that "frying the slime" looked cool and that Carpenter had no real desire to plot a believable film.

I'll be honest as good as the old film was I actually thought the remake was a lot better. In fact it's actually not just my favorate film from my favorate movie director John Carpenter but it's also one of my personal top ten favorate horror movies ever (number 6 to be persise).

There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said so I'll keep it brief. What I love about the film is in it's atmosphere, setting, music score, and of course the special effects which I felt were the biggest highlight for the film. The atmosphere and setting were excelent because you really felt that sense of isolation from how remote and far they were located. The snow, cold, and darkness were palpable because it really felt like The Thing could be anywhere in the dark enviorment. The music score was excelent which also was one of the factors that gave me chills, from the begining theme which to me is one of the most memorable horror theme songs I've ever heard.

And of course the creature and gore effects which I'll never forget. They were just excelent grade A stuff because there is no CGI. It's the old fashioned real deal from the make up effects and pupetering it really made The Thing monster look terrifyingly real. The Thing monster was truely a menice because the fact it can replicate itself and shapeshift made it all the more threatening because just like the Macready character I couldn't tell who was The Thing myself. The effects really added to the sense of intensity, I know when I watched the film I was tense I was litterally at the edge of my seat and grip it hard. And there were three scenes I actually jumped in my seat which doesn't happen to me often and thats a great feeling. (Don't read this if you haven't seen the film)Like that blood test sense but most of all for me it was when the doctor was trying to put the panels on this guy that was supposedly having a heart attack and then suddenly his chest suddenly opens up.

Some say you never really get into the character totally but that's the point, because it's a feeling of paranoia where you can't trust anyone because anyone can be the Thing. And that of course was the whole theme of the film it was all about paranoia and distrust, this was something that really fit from the 80's decade which had their issue with the cold war to even now the 2000 era with our issue with terroism and everything else happening. Heck in the schools I've been to hardly may people trusted each other because some were bullies or sell outs, I've had some people I thought were friends but then they turned out to acually be enimies that wanted and tried to destroy my life.

Well that's all I really have to say about the film, so "The Thing" is awdsome but remember be careful of who you trust.

The Thing has a claustrophobic feel, very similar to Alien. The Thing itself is basically a shape-shifting alien creature that can replicate the appearance of anyone. This creates an atmosphere of paranoia since nobody can trust anybody.

The Thing is also super gory, especially for its time. I'm not a huge fan of gore, so I would have preferred less, but it does have a certain shock value.

It's very well done. Very taut with an especially tense ending.

John Carpenter, in his remake of Howard Hawk's classic horror film "The Thing", has created not only his greatest masterpiece, but one of the greatest films in the history of cinematic horror.

The film follows a small band of Antarctic researchers at the start of the polar winter who find that their dullness and tedium is disrupted by two members of another expedition in pursuit of one of their dogs, which they are trying to kill. In investigating, they find the other expedition excavated an alien which can turn into any animate living form (though it must kill whatever it's taking the form of). And now the alien is in our heroes outpost, and it could be any one of them.

As you can imagine about the premise, this is a horror film with a very human plot. Yes, there's a beastie, and it wants to kill everybody, but the beastie isn't really on screen, in a recognizable fashion, very often. The film's really about the humans - who are trying to get by, trying to find the monster, and trying to find out who they can trust. This paranoia builds up the predominant tone of the movie.

Consequently, this makes for one of Carpenter's bleakest, grimmest film. None of the wry humor that has become Carpenter's trademark (especially in his collaborations with Kurt Russell) is present here, giving the film a really serious tone that sets it completely apart from all the rest of Carpenter's work. Likewise, the tension of the film is augmented by the claustrophobic feel of the sets. The interiors of the film are tight, and kind of cluttered. The exteriors, on the other hand, despite their vastness, greatly enhance the isolation and confined feel of the film - there's nothing for hundreds of miles in any direction, so where can you run to?

In conclusion, for all of the excellent films (Halloween, Escape from New York, Assault on Precinct 13, Big Trouble in Little China) that Carpenter is known for, it is for The Thing, that he shall go down in history. With this film, he sets his place in the history of cinema, with what is, beyond a doubt, his greatest work.

John Carpenter's The Thing is quite possibly the best remake I have ever seen, and one of the best overall horror films. Though technically, it really shouldn't be considered a remake. The story's quite different this time around, enough to make it almost entirely different from it's predecessor "The Thing from Another World".

Kurt Russel turns out the best performance in his career thus far in this film as MacReady. Wilford Brimley shows off an incredible sense of paranoia that is tough to equal. Speaking of paranoia, the film itself is covered head to toe with it. It succeeds in keeping the audience consistently on edge, making the scenes where the monster shows up even scarier. By the way, the monster effects have aged spectacularly. Rob Bottin's use of puppetry is, even today, far better executed than the CGI in most horror films. All in all, if you love horror movies, it's imperative that you watch The Thing. Sure, the "Who Goes There?" concept has been done to death (it was used for the original Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, this, Alien, and countless other sci-fi horror films), but The Thing is probably the most faithful version yet.

This is a great movie. It tells the story of 12 men trapped in antartica with no where to go. They discover that another expedition has found an alien who can turn into human beings. What is does is kill the human and take over his body. Now they have to find out who is human who is alien and get rid of the aline. All the while they realize they have little time to do it because soon they will be freezing. Russell is wonderful as mccready as is the rest of the cast. Where this movie shines is in the special effects. This is 1981 and the effects hold up even to today. They are actually better because if this movie was made now it would have been totally cgied. The paranoia the tension its all here. I recommend this movie because its well done and its a great movie.

John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the those movies you either love it or hate it, but the nostagatia of it does prove to be good. Based upon a chilling version of Christian I. Nyby's 1951 classic "The Thing". "The Thing" is quite remarkable and impressive at most parts. Kurt Russell's character makes a outstanding performance in this movie, especially when those parts where you see him, scrapping everyone in the facility , in need for blood test study to many parts of him disingrated those things. Kurt Russell also did many movies where he did, amazing performances in, Tombstone, Soldier, Poseidon and many more. The starting of the movie, where you see a helicopter shooting a wolf for some apparent reason is just confusing, it appears that the guy sucks at shooting and keeps on missing the target. Pissed off as he should be, throws grenades and a hilarious part that i like the most, destroying his helicopter and his mate into pieces. Its a really laugh out loud moment. He then shoots the guy's leg instead of the wolf and got HEADSHOT by some guy in the base. OWNED! I will come back to this later.

The story is kinda intriguing and very good, i haven't seen, Christian I. Nyby's 1951 classic "The Thing", so i don't know which is better. Maybe it might be a book or something. In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers after seeing some Noweigans on tail with a wolf, sought out their research facility. They found out that its deserted and many precious research notes scattered. But soon discovers some weird and scarce body of some form of alien buried in the snow, over 100,000 years. Transporting back to the remote research facility, testing out what the hell it is.

The scene where you see Doc doing some kinda of surgegy to it, looks disgusting and menacing, seeing him cut through parts of its body, almost made me nausea. Back to the wolf part. The wolf aimlessly wondered off searching for something or someone, until some guy ordered him to go to the kennel. But havoc starts and the wolf mutantic into some kinda of beast. This part is my favourite when some guy says, "Mac, we need the flamethrower!" But in confusion, why is there flamethrower in Antarctica? Why?

Then havoc starts out when the alien body, appears to be alive and start the imidating process to some person, when the researchers finds out, Kurt Russell's character, MacReady disingrated him to ashes with a flamethrower. But tensions turned as everyone is for themselves, a high risk of paranoia shifts through the research facility. Taking blood tests and tieing up everyone. Theres a part where you see a head formed into some kind of headcrab from "Halflife" or something from "Doom 3", its just very gruesome and scared me abit. The pre-CGI effects are near flawless - truly realistic and grotesque. Its just amazing to see how much time they put into, making these scary monsterisites. The Action scene seqeuences feels and looks just awesome and impressive, its just intriguing how realistic this is. Especially when this movie came out, around the 80s. The acting in the movie, feels kind of boring at some parts, they seemed to have no emotion at some parts.

In conclusion, John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of the most great movie out there. With impressive CGI effects to the purely astounding action sequences. Its truely a classic. The Ending where MacReady (Kurt Russell), he says "Yeah, **** you too" and throwing a dianomight is amazing, disingrating it to ashes, but at the end raises some eyebrows. What it really is, is who are you a human or a alien lifeform? This is a great recommended purchase.
