This is one of those movies that is designed to make you think...or um...feel. There's that metaphysical line again, so make the judgment call.
Either way, Michael Keaton, comedy actor, finds himself in this role. Able for once to put on a human face and show some emotions. The poor guy is dying, not really a spoiler you find out pretty early on, and his wife is pregnant. What are they going to do? How is is going to raise his family? Is she going to be alone? But the most important question, and the one that really matters, and what the movie is really about: are you (whom ever that is) living your life? Really living it? And this question is attacked in the classic hero architecture, poor Michael doesn't want the part and resists, but in the end finds that he is a hero and that he can, no matter how life reveals itself, be one.
This is a touching movie, both Keaton and Kidman, finally get real roles that lead them through their characters.
The subgenre says "tear jerker"...that's probably true.
