Birdee Pruitt (played by Sandra Bullock) Finds out on a talk show that her husband has been having an affair with her best friend and that he is leaving her. Not knowing what to do she heads home to her mom's house with her little girl Bernice Pruitt (played by Mae Whitman) to the town where she grew up. She tries to start a whole new life there but she continually runs into people from her past. They remind her of the horrible person she once was in her youth. She takes a job at a local photo place developing film. She run into Justin Matisse (played by Harry Connick Jr.) who pursues Birdee throughout the movie. Birdee's life gets even more compliated when Bernice has hopes of her mom and dad getting back together. And taking an instant dislike to Justin because she feels he is getting in the way of her mom and dad getting back together. To make matters worse Bill Pruitt (played by Michael Paré) Bernice's dad shows up at their door. She is hurt when she wants to go with her dad but he doesn't want her. Birdee in the mean time has taken a liking to Justin and the rest of the film shows how they resolve their differences.
