The 1980s saw the rise of super stations, satellite networks, the pinnacle of a cable boom, and certainly news was a part of all this (now it's in a steady decline). Therefore, the concept of this movie makes sense, to poke fun at the over-population of news on the network (and local) level with "pretty boys and girls". So there is room for satire here.

Holly Hunter is critical to this movie, yet I find her portrayal annoying and her accent grating. Hurt is fairly good, but the comedy is equally focused on relationships and topic. "Network" had relationships but all were subservient to the acidly biting and much deeper message.

"Broadcast News" deserves some praise for wanting to lampoon issues of the day, but falls down by 'soft-soaping" them in a morass of 80s sensibilities.
