"A vastly overrated slash-fest that has many genuine scares but absolutely appalling acting."

'Friday the 13th' is one of the most painfully and depressingly overrated films I have ever seen. It has some truly terrifying moments and the whole film builds up a truly creepy atmosphere, but it's also crudely made, terribly acted, poorly constructed, gratuitously violent and...have I said bad acting? Oh well, it deserves another mention.

The sequels have been much worse, 'Part 2' was the only sequel that bothered to scare its audience and 'Part VII' was the only one I actually enjoyed, but if you're ever going to watch a 'Friday the 13th' film this is the one to watch, but on the whole I can barely even recommend it because it's simply far too flawed for my tastes.

This is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, next to Halloween and Nightmare On Elm Street. Good suspense, good execution, good plot, good acting......what more is there to say? There is some character development unlike most of the garnish sequels that followed. I actually felt for poor Pamela Voorhees at the end. That last scene with the canoe really did scare the pants off me, and still does whenever I watch it. I believe this should be in any horror fan's collection.

If you're a fan of graphic, explicit, ruthless, pointless, aimless, plot less, needless violence and murders, then Friday the 13th (and any of it's countless sequels) is the movie for you.

If you're a fan of graphic, explicit, ruthless, pointless, aimless, plot less, needless violence and murders, then Friday the 13th (and any of it's countless sequels) is the movie for you.

But surprisingly, it's a pretty well-made film. The murders and killings are executed with wit. Not as clever as Saw, Evil Dead 2, or Nightmare on Elm Street, but clever nonetheless.

Is it as violent and horrible as I say? Yes. While the violence in it's sequels are literally a thousand times more graphic ("Friday the 13th IV: The Final Chapter" especially, which is easily the most violent disturbing movie I've ever seen), it is still a horribly violent film, and easily as violent and disturbing as many modern mainstream horror flicks, despite what Bart Simpson says.

Should you take this film seriously? Of course not. If you actually do take this film or any of it's sequels seriously, then I think there might be a problem. Horror fans, this is the film for you. Movie fans, rent it first.

Way much better than Nightmare On Elm Street and Halloween.
