Unfortunately, by the 1990s, moviemakers realized that kids were the major audiences for new movies and "Hackers" is one of a long string of worthless films that panders to youth who haven't done anything but want to feel that they are heroes.

While this is mostly a Macintosh movie as far as early laptops and PCs (Powerbook 500s, Quadras and Performas), the computer graphics representing the "inside" of computers are fanatastical and rendered in the millions of colors not available for another 5 years, sort of a kaleidoscope of video game imagery with "attacking" beams of light. The explanations and portrayals of hacking are ridiculously anthropomorphized, all the way up to a "DaVinci" virus that pleads "save me" when it is somehow thwarted.

Rounding out the movie is the usual outcast teen story of romance and the hero winning the girl through "leet skills". Nevermind that the target demographic for this flick was mostly overweight kids with acne and poor social skills.

This was another one of those films I watched when I was really young about 13. I really liked this film cause I'm into new technology and computers.

This was another one of those films I watched when I was really young about 13. I really liked this film cause I'm into new technology and computers.

This film was both a slight if exagerated introduction into that techno counter culture but also slightly prolific of the techno counter culture we have now. It's true that one aspect of the film kinda dates it a bit, mainly VR technology which is now a dead concept but you have to understand this film was made at a time when computer technology was just on the rise.

This is one of those films you really don't see much of, cyberpunk movies are rare let alone a concept not tackled that much on the visual medium (or done right), or even a crime suspense thriller of this nature. But this is one of them and one of the ones that are actually good.

It's true the film doesn't take itself seriously but that's a good thing because it just adds to the fun and funny comic book sensablitiy of the film and that's the nature of the film to be fun. To me this is almost like a young adult "William Gibson" story.

The production value is good I really like the colur sceme that really helps create a underground strange but facinating techno savy subculture. Special effects were good which helped reenforce the illusion of hacker action of inflitrating cyberspace. My favorate one was when Dade hacks into "The Plague's" super computer which I though was cool looking, it still looks good but not entirely special anymore. Even the plot I thought was good and believable. However special effects and plot alone are not what makes this film for me.

To me it's really in the activity and interplay between the two characters Dade/Crash Overide (Johnny Lee Miller) and Kate/Acid Burn (Angelina Jolie)as well as supporting players that make the film. Dade is a good protagonist he's also not the kind I see much who uses thinking and wits as a means to overcome evil instead of cleche approaches like fists and guns. He's a passive agressive but reluctant cyber rebel. Kate is more on the agressive side, is an equally skilled cyber rebel and in reality is independent; I remember actually having a crush on this character what can I say I'm attracted to bad girls and I've dated girls like her. I really like how the relationship between the two develops it feels realistic (well sort of) because it's a gradual develpment, they don't fall in love imediately heck they don't even like one another at first. Their Hacker gang friends are great their funny, unque, strange, smart individuals. I love the fact that not just are the heroes anti-heroes but their sort of outsiders a group what might be considered geeks and nerds. They sort of remind me of the kind of friends I have, I'm friends with people like that and were all also into technonolgy.

There is sort of parallel contrast between Dade and the main bad guy The Plague (Fisher Stevens) whom is a sneaky comical but nasty villian. The Plague is a bad guy in the guise of good since he works for a security coporation. He things about his own gains and doesn't care about the consequences of his actions whether it hurts people or not. Dade though he's a cyber rebel and is doing a few things that are illegal he's not a bad guy what he's currently doing isn't harming anyone or even want to, and he knows in fact learned the hard way what happens when you cross the line. He also cares about his friends, mom, as well as Kate. Where The Plague cares about no one but himself.

But I have to warn you this film might not be for everyone, if your not into/intrested in technology that much let alone the cyberpunk subgenere then this might not be for you.

"Hackers" is a film worth longing on to.

Entertaining and lively movie if you take it for what it is in my personal opinion.

Of course the story is slightly over the top and basic in terms of the good guy anti hero types versus bad guy movie standard. Yes it does make some minor changes in it's pre-set storyline from the more traditional black and white story ethic where your bad guy is obviously nasty and your good guy is a morally grounded, strond minded defender.

The movie may seem to be littered with buzz words and jargon of the techno generation of computer hackers but without some of the lingo it'd lose it's appeal entirely. It seems to be from my impression well researched, put together and constructed. The backgrounds and scene's are atypical of the stereotype of characters with fluroscent colours and clothes and trendy rollerblades being the preferred method of transport, however the soundtrack is one part of the film that you cannot fault. It is vast and carefully selected and compliments the film in many ways during the progression through the world of our group of young hopefuls. So in general the scene's are lively and engrossing with their many colours (except for the school house of course..) Soundtrack is sublime and well researched however the actual execution of the film and the rather see-through storyline certainly detract from it's appeal.

Overall not a total waste of your time but not exactly life changing. ;)

It's not great, but its an ok movie thats fun to watch. The story was weak, the characters were bad, but for some reason you can't look away.
