An interesting but halting early Tobey Maguire role, but its not really enough.

Its kind of intriguing how many people have wanted to make John Irving novels into movies but they almost never work. "Garp", "Hotel New Hampshsire" - none of them have enough time to go into the detail of the odd and intricate stories that Irving tells. "The Cider House Rules" has some nice scenes, and Caine is charming and affecting in his both his dialog and in portraying an ability to inspire and care. But in the end, there's not enough here to stand on its own and make an outstanding story, especially since so many early details are lost.
