While in a drugged-out haze, a crack-addicted mother (Halle Berry) leaves her baby in a cardboard box in an alley. Garbagemen find the child and take the boy to a hospital, where he is treated and later adopted by a husband and wife (David Strathairn, Jessica Lange). Years later, the boy's birth mother has sobered up, and, after learning of her son's survival, sues for custody.
