In 1960s Texas, the Whit family meets to pay respects to their late patriarch, Sparta. This is no normal funeral, and the Whits are no normal family. L'il Sparta spies on his grandmother and sees her involved in macabre and sinister rituals. His parents pick up Aunt Miranda from an institution where she has been locked away because of her part in a family scandal. In the stables, the camel belonging to the deceased Sparta needs to be calmed down, after which Lil' Sparta meets his grandfather's ghost who recounts all the family tales.
