Strange, how popular this was back in its heyday, and how relatively unheard of it is nowadays on horror movie forums and such. The upcoming remake, to be released in 2009, will probably change that however. While it's not a brilliant masterpiece, it's a very violent, very entertaining and occasionally very creepy slasher film. The acting is consistent and appropriate to the material, and the characters are likable.

After 6-year-old Andy Barclay's (Alex Vincent) babysitter is violently pushed out of a window to her death, nobody believes him when he says that "Chucky", his new birthday doll, did it! Until things start going terribly wrong...dead wrong. And when an ensuing rampage of gruesome murders lead a detective (Christ Sarandon) back to the same toy, he discovers that the real terror has just begun...the deranged doll has plans to transfer his evil spirit into a living human being - young Andy! 'Child's Play' is also triumph of special effects. From what I have seen, there are not many films prior to 1988 that have quite as convincing special effects as this film does. Besides from incredible scenes of buildings blowing up in flames, Chucky's face movements are just incredible for a movie that is, now, twenty years old.

Surprisingly creepy.

You either like or dislike this one. It actually is capable of being scary at times, which is hard to believe for a movie about a doll. Its supernatural themes are emphasized in a more believable way than most. Chucky is very sadistic and this is way before they start to make the series more for humor.

I personally love this film and its definitely worth at least seeing for any horror fan.

This movie brings nightmares to many children, but I like

Child's Play is an excellent film. But what ponders me is how the wires that make the doll work aren't visible which is a great special effect even today it's considered advanced. This movie is one of my all time favorites.

For a 1988 horror film, "Child's Play" had amazing special effects for its time. The doll's movements were jumpy, but that gives it the illusion of possession as best as possible. The acting was mediocre at best, with gaps here and there, but the chilling scenes peppering the film made up for it. I still remember watching the last few minutes when I was 9, and watching the heroes finally kill Chucky. Then the open door Andy looks through fades to one of the most beautiful melodies ever for the credits. It was a great movie, and I recommend watching it to the very last second, as it will have you on your toes until then.

I thought it was a rather good horror movie. Even with the fact that we knew Chucky was an evil doll, you can't help but love him. The plot was easy to follow, the characters were well though out, and for the most Chucky seemed realistic. Although...

I thought it was a rather good horror movie. Even with the fact that we knew Chucky was an evil doll, you can't help but love him. The plot was easy to follow, the characters were well though out, and for the most Chucky seemed realistic. Although I would have liked if it would have had more "at the edge of you seat" moments, more of a shock value. But all and all still a good movie.
