During their summer vacation, and before the title credits, Danny Zuko and Sandra "Sandy" Olsson meet at a beach. Various scenes from their holiday are shown, but then the summer ends, and Sandy has to return to Australia. She is worried that this is the end for her and Danny; they may never see each other again. But Danny assures her that it's only the beginning.

Danny is right. By a twist of fate, Sandy does not return to Australia. Her family has a change of plans, and she ends up attending Rydell High School - the same school as Danny Zuko. Sandy makes friends with Frenchy, a member of the school girls' gang, the "Pink Ladies". The T-Birds, the boys' gang of which Danny is the leader, Kenickie, a member of the T-Birds, eggs Danny on to tell them about his summer romance, while the Pink Ladies egg Sandy on. This results in "Summer Nights" - the two main characters give accounts of their holiday - a later scene in the movie makes it clear that Danny is exaggerating - though neither is aware of the other's presence at the school.

Encouraged by the preppy school spirit girl, Patty Simcox, Sandy joins the Rydell cheerleaders. The Pink Ladies decide to reunite Danny and Sandy, but Danny wants to protect his cool image, and his behavior towards Sandy causes her to storm off in tears. Danny stares after her for a moment, but then quickly turns back into a cool guy and goes off with his friends.

Frenchy attempts to cheer Sandy up by inviting her to a pajama party at her house with the rest of the gang. Sandy comes along, but Rizzo soon gets fed up with Sandy's goody-two-shoes behavior. Sandy chokes on a cigarette, can't stand the taste of wine, and is horrified at the idea of having her ears pierced. Frenchy is insistent, and takes her into the bathroom, but Sandy throws up at the first sight of blood. Frenchy announces to Jan and Marty that she is dropping out of Rydell and going to beauty school, because she wants to be a beautician - "a very strategic career move." Rizzo has had enough - she lampoons Sandy, and soon has even Frenchy joining in.

The T-Birds arrive outside Frenchy's house. Rizzo leaves the party, and she and Kenickie flirt, then Kenickie invites her into the car, and dumps the other T-Birds. Danny leaves of his own accord. Rizzo and Kenickie drive off, arms around each other, and the other T-Birds go for a slice of pizza. Marty, the flirty member of the Pink Ladies, decides to write to one of her (numerous) penpals, while Sandy goes outside, and decides that in spite of everything, she still loves Danny ("Hopelessly Devoted to You"). The scene shifts to Rizzo and Kenickie having sex in the back seat of his new car. Kenickie's condom breaks; they both worry briefly, then continue making out. They are soon interrupted by Leo, leader of rival gang the Scorpions, who damages Kenickie's car.

Whilst at work on repairing the car, the T-Birds fantasize about what it will look like when it has had a paint job. Danny meets Sandy at the Frosty Palace, and tries to apologize for his actions. He sees that Sandy is sharing a soda with Tom Chisum, a jock, and decides that if that's the sort of man she likes, he's going to join the jocks to impress her. The next scene follows his disastrous performances in basketball, wrestling, and baseball, where he keeps resorting to violence. He finally finds his ideal sport in track, until the sight of Sandy distracts him, and he falls. Sandy leaves Tom Chisum to see if Danny is alright, and they are finally reconciled.

Later, Danny takes Sandy to the school's dance, where the TV show National Bandstand plans to broadcast live from the school. Rizzo, now mad at Kenickie, takes the rival gang's leader, thus making Kenickie take the rival gangleader's girlfriend, Cha-Cha DeGregorio. The Disc jockey Vince Fontaine develops a crush on Pink lady Marty. During the dance-off, Rizzo leaves in a huff, seeing Kenicke dancing with Cha-Cha, and Danny and Sandy are one of the few still in the dance-off. But soon, someone pulls Sandy away from Danny, and Cha-Cha starts dancing with Danny and leaves Kenicke, and Sandy soon realizes that Cha-Cha was one of Danny's past girlfriends. Sandy leaves the gym, and Danny and Cha-Cha end up winning the contest. When they share their spotlight dance, three of the T-Birds run in front of the camera and moon the crowd.

Later, Leo challenges Kenickie to a race at Thunder Road, a summer-dry irrigation canal. Once there, Kenickie gets a concussion and the T-Birds say that Danny needs to drive. While Danny is driving, Sandy is thinking from afar about her appearance, and agrees with Rizzo that she needs to be more of ALL of herself.

Later, on the last day of school carnival, Danny arrives, having decided to turn Jock to win Sandy over. However, Sandy arrives having become more like a member of the Pink Ladies. Danny finds her extremely attractive and the two end up driving away in Kenickie's car.

A really well done movie. This is one of my favourite movies. I love watching this movie over and over hehe. The story is awesome.

love the soundtrack love this movie when i just want to pass the time or is in a mood to sing and my kids love to dance to this movie it is a cool movie that any age can enjoy

  GREASE is not really the 1950's teen-age movie musical it thinks it is, but a contemporary fantasy about a 1950's teen-age musical--a larger, funnier, wittier and more imaginative-than-Hollywood movie with a life that is all its own. It uses the Eisenhower era -- the characters, costumes, gestures and particularly, the music--to create a time and place that have less to do with any real 50's than with a kind of show business that is both timeless and old-fashioned, both sentimental and wise. The movie is also terrific fun.

  Sandy, Danny, and their sexier counterparts Rizzo and Kenickie are spectacular fun to watch, especially in their non-TV-edited glory. Though it's virtually impossible to forget, and stay quiet during, the film's many songs, it's also surprising to remember all of the racy dialogue and double entendres in the original. Or maybe it's just that we never got them when we were ten.

  The screen Grease seemed at the time a big, overblown version of the sassy, gritty stage musical. Now the differences seem less important.   there are times when Grease really kicks in. I'm fond of Channing singing "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee, rotten with virginity" and then telling an imaginary Troy Donahue, "I know what you wanna do." And most of the big musical numbers work, especially the showstopper: the sunlit Danny-Sandy duet to "Summer Dreams."   Travolta's star presence is confirmed in Grease, a weak musical comedy vehicle . The strength of Travolta's performance isn't from dialogue but shots of Travolta reacting, suddenly becoming macho when he realizes the gang is watching him talk to his girlfriend or smothering a giggle after accidentally elbowing Olivia Newton-John in the breast.   Grease isn't a four-star musical. It's fluffy and unimportant, and it gets tedious toward the end with the car-racing sequence that Kleiser staged in the paved-in-concrete Los Angeles River. The friskiness of the performers, the choreography by Patricia Birch and most of all Travolta's phenomenal charm give it its value.

  A limp, cheaply made version of the Broadway. Director Randal Kleiser shows no real sense of how a musical is constructed: the songs are bunched together, the production numbers don't move, and the whole project shifts awkwardly between naturalism and stylization.
