Having had aspirations of becoming a professional baseball player his entire life, a Cape Cod, Massachusetts born and raised man, Ryan Dunne (Freddie Prinze Jr.), plays in a summer semi-professional league with hopes of having the major league scouts catch a glimpse of his pitching. However, there are a few distractions that may get in the way of Dunne's dream. While not playing baseball and attempting to impress his team's coach (Brian Dennehy), Dunne works for his father's (Fred Ward) lawn service, hangs out at local bars with his friends and romances Tenley Parrish (Jessica Biel), the attractive daughter of one of his father's wealthy clients, who does not approve of their relationship. As the summer begins, the question is whether the hot-tempered Dunne can gain control of his life, both on and off the mound, and finally make his dreams come true.
