This period piece based on the hit Broadway musical of the same name focuses on a Midwestern farmboy, John Savage plays Claude, as he goes to New York City to enlist for the Vietnam War. While in NYC, he befriends a gang of hippies, Berger played by Treat Williams, Sheila who is played by Beverly D'Angelo Jeannie who is played by Annie Golden, Hud who is played by Dorsey Wright and Woof who is played by Don Dacus. He doesn't know anybody in town during the time he has to wait for his induction so he hangs out with these people. They teach him the ways of the free life style that the hippies lived. He tries drugs which he has never tried before and finds true love in a millionaire's daughter. Though the group tries to talk him out of it he still goes into the service. The group misses him after Sheila gets a letter from him and they decide to go visit him. In the mean time Berger goes in to replace Claude while Claude is visiting. While this is taking place the troop is called into battle. Claude is forced to go into battle instead of Claude since he is there. Claude rushes back to try to catch them but is to late. The gang learns the fate of their friend soon after he leaves.
