This is a middle of the road review as this film seems to me to be a mixed bag. On the one hand you have a very simply screenplay, where the main characters basically try to avoid work (that is if there is actually work to be done). The screenplay does a good job of pointing a sarcastic finger at temp work and what it is like to work in a corporate office in the US.
It's clean it's simple. Yet, I really think it is trying to hard. The overall feel of this work is something akin to an 'art house picture' yet it never really achieves that, but the feeling that it is really trying to get there doesn't diminish. There are clever artist moments, but overall the way this picture presents itself you are left feeling that maybe it was missing something.
On the other hand, the acting is great due to the very comedic and well designed dialog. It is the work of the cast that makes this film really unique. Parker Posey is phenom as the slightly kleptomanicial, pained temp, looking for something better for her life. Toni Collette is great with her timid heart wrenching loyalty. Lisa Kudrow, is well, Lisa Kudrow, please someone let her have a job where she gets to act, I'd like to see what she's really capable of, phoebe is getting old.
Overall this film does a good job of getting it's stab at the dark comedic view of the working of an office. You can see where some of the later works modeled their approach after this movie...and I think that probably says something more than I could ever say about it.
