Patrick Bateman is a Wall Street Broker with just about everything to live for. He's young, handsome, rich, with a top job, first class apartment, and nothing he cannot afford. He's also a psychopath. In the shallow, materialistic culture of 1980s New York, where every man's prime concerns are his business card, his money and which expensive restaurants he can dine at, the boundaries of identity have become so indistinct that Patrick has lost touch with himself and his surroundings. He can only find meaning of any kind through brutal murder, and by night he stalks the streets of Manhattan, killing prostitutes, homeless people, anyone with a lower status than himself, whose remains soon begin to build up in Patrick's apartment. Despite his insanity, those around him remain oblivious, seeing Patrick as just another of them... but as his nightly bloodlust overflows into his days and his frustration drives him more and more insane, for how much longer can he get away with murder?
