Louis the Swan is born without a voice. Being a trumpeter swan this can be a big problem, and the problem is brought forth in some of the early scenes. His father wants the best for his son, even though he is "defective" and decides to give him a voice by stealing a trumpet from a music store in Billings, Montana. Once Louis gets the trumpet, his life changes for the better, but he is bothered by the fact that his father has been labeled a thief. He decides to earn money to pay back for the trumpet. He befriends a boy, Sam Beaver, who helps him earn money at a boys camp, and later on enrolls him in his school so Louis can learn to read and write English. After school is out, Louis needs more money and flies to Boston to trumpet for the public in the Boston Gardens, and becomes a famous trumpet player.
