    FilmSpot Forum Terms

    Acceptance of Terms

FilmSpot provides message board services to you, the visitor, based on its Terms of Service outlined here. When using the forums provided by FilmSpot, you are subject to these posted terms. Usage of the services on this site means acceptance of these terms. The TOS may be changed and without direct notice to individual visitors, so it is recommended that you check back with this page if you have questions or concerns.

    Account Responsibility

Users are solely responsible for protecting their accounts from access by others. "Group" and/or shared accounts are not allowed. You are strongly encouraged to select a hard-to-guess password and not reuse that password on any other sites where it may be read by the owners or administrators of that site.

While it is acceptable for users to maintain multiple accounts on FilmSpot, FilmSpot can and does track multiple shared accounts from a single or multiple computers as one account in terms of TOS violations. If the TOS is violated severely enough to warrant banning one account, all known accounts shared between a single or multiple users who use the same computer may also be banned for the actions of the violating account at the administrators' discretion.

Because of this rule, it is recommended that board users do not share their accounts with others, nor share their computers used to access the site with others, as the actions of some other person could easily directly impact all known shared message board accounts

    Content Notice

By viewing the site content, you agree that all content on the FilmSpot message boards is the responsibility of the person from which the content originated. You agree that neither FilmSpot nor its sponsors or affiliates are responsible for all content that you personally post or upload. FilmSpot does not directly control any content posted on the boards, and does not guarantee the truthfulness or quality of any content. You agree that while using the FilmSpot message boards, you may be exposed to content that is offensive or objectionable, and that you will in no way hold FilmSpot nor its sponsors or affiliates liable in any way, shape, or form for any harm or loss that may come to you or others because of viewing this content. FilmSpot is not responsible for screening content before it is posted, although an offensive language filter is installed on the system that will reject certain posts that may contain certain words considered offensive or used most often in an offensive way.

    Privacy and Release of Information

Under normal circumstances, FilmSpot will never release your provided information to any third-party without a court order requiring us to do so. However, in cases of certain severe or repeated TOS violations or illegal activities, we reserve the right to send any known information about you and your accounts to your ISP (including libraries, schools, and places of employment), e-mail service provider, your ISP account owner (if someone else is paying for it), and any parties whose copyright has clearly been infringed by your actions on the boards.

    Registration Requirements

To view messages on the FilmSpot message boards without user restrictions, no registration is required or necessary. To post messages on the boards, view boards with level restrictions, and use other advanced services, you must register with FilmSpot using a valid e-mail address. On registration, an activation key in the form of a URL will be mailed to the address you provided. You must visit this URL using the web browser of your choice to activate the account. No posting privileges are granted until the account is activated. FilmSpot does not require you to use your real name or other identification that can be easily traced to you, and the e-mail address you provide will be kept private. To register on FilmSpot, registrants must be 13 years or older. FilmSpot does not knowingly collect any information from any users under 13 years, and if it is found that an underage user has fraudulently registered, their account will immediately be terminated.

    Terms Violations

Topics and message posts that violate the TOS will be deleted from the boards, and additional penalties may be applied at the moderator's discretion. Reposting deleted violations (yours or those of others) is also considered a violation.
Messages and topics may be removed for any reason at the sole discretion of FilmSpot and its appointed moderators. User accounts may be warned, suspended, or revoked for any reason at the sole discretion of FilmSpot and its appointed moderators. All determinations of what is "acceptable" and "unacceptable" content will be determined solely by FilmSpot and whoever it appoints as moderators. You agree the decision of the moderators and administrators is final, and you may not legally contest their rulings.

Intentional, repeated, or severe violations are cause for the banning of your account, all use of the boards from your IP address or your entire ISP, and FilmSpot contacting your ISP or other relevant parties about your activities.

    Member Conduct

    Advertising

Posts that clearly advertise or promote a service, product, site, or personal blog (here or otherwise) are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Unsolicited commercial or personal web site advertisements
    For-Sale/For-Trade/For-Auction/Wanted notices
DVDs, VHS tapes, downloads, screen captures, and any other copyrighted material, in part or in whole, owned by someone else
"Make Money Fast" scams, chain letters, and pyramid schemes
    Advertising for another message board
Solicitations and drawings for charity or profit events
Users are allowed to include a web site address in a signature (text only), request comments on their personal site in a social setting, or providing only once an interesting or relevant link to another site.

    Bugs and Exploits

Using exploits or tricks in the FilmSpot code to gain privileges, access, or abilities not clearly intended by the board design are prohibited. Making exploits public or using them for personal benefit is grounds for immediate loss of all known accounts.

    Censor Bypassing

The FilmSpot message boards are programmed with a list of words that are considered vulgar under any context, and these words are not allowed to be posted. Trying to bypass the censor by misspelling, inserting spaces or symbols, switching letters, using look-alike symbols, or any other method is not allowed. The only acceptable method of posting one of these vulgar words is to obscure it, making it impossible to determine what the word is without context. Also, certain words are restricted from being used in topic titles and user information pages; bypassing the censor to post those words where they are restricted is also disallowed. For example, if "gris" is a banned word:
Not allowed: g-r-i-s, gr*s, g***, 9|-1$, girs, gryeeeas, grizznizz, **** (rhymes with "bris")
    Allowed: ****, ****ed, ****ing, g'ed, g-word

    Disruptive Posting

Posts that disrupt the message boards for other users, intentional or not, are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited, to: Message posts or topic titles that force browsers to scroll horizontally
    Large blank or content-free posts
Posts that consist only of quotes, or quotes plus an unsubstantial reply ("Okay" - "Yeah!" - "LOL" - smile), or just an unsubstantial reply.
Excessive quoting (i.e., quoting a ten-paragraph post to respond to one sentence)
"Bumping" your older topics (posting in them well after the last post and/or primarily to keep them near the top of a forum)
Posting multiple identical or near-identical messages or topics, including "fad" topics
Intentionally hard-to-read topic titles and thread content (i.e. ALL CAPS, AlTeRnAtE cApS, no spaces, no or excessive punctuation, 1337 speak, et cetera)
Posting multiple hard-to-read or absurd messages in a single or multiple topics
Posting large ASCII art (except in social topics specifically calling for it)
Post counting (i.e. "First", "100th Post")

    False Moderation Reports

Please note that Report Abuse is only to be used for genuine breaches of these Terms of Service and is not to be used as a means of settling petty disputes and squabbles between board users. Repeated reporting of posts which do not violate the terms may result in your account being suspended.

    Flaming (Insulting Other Users)

Posts of a hostile or insulting nature, toward other board members and a film’s cast or crew, individually or as a group, directly or indirectly, beyond the bounds of reasonable and informed criticism and debate, are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Name-calling ("You're an idiot", "You moron")
    Direct insults ("Screw you")
    Offensive orders ("Go kill yourself")
Suggestions ("Are you stupid or something?") or insults towards family ("Your mom...")
Physical threats, even as jokes ("I'm going to hunt you down and set you on fire!")
Derogatory references to another poster's experience or lack thereof.
Excessive upper-cap posting, which is the Internet equivalent of hostile screaming.

    Flooding, Invading, and Board Wars

Users will be immediately banned (with any associated accounts) for:
Flooding a board with multiple disruptive topics or posts
Posting a single identical post on multiple forums, including but not limited to petitions
Invading another board (flooding a board as a group with multiple topics or posts)
Announcing or inciting a "war" or any conflict with the regular members of another board.

    Harassment/Stalking/Privacy

Continual harassing behavior directed towards a certain individual or group with the intent of creating an intimidating, offensive, or hostile environment on the boards with the Personal Messaging (PM) system, with or without use of explicit or implicit threats is strictly prohibited. Posting private information without permission is also prohibited.

    Illegal Activities

Posts that violate or incite others to violate the law are not allowed. This includes (but is not limited to) discussing, asking for or providing, in any way, shape, or form:
Illegal copies of copyrighted software and related applications (ROMs, Warez)
Methods of avoiding copyright protection (Cracks, No-CD Patches, CD Keys)
Illegal copies in part or in whole of copyrighted music (MP3s), movies, videos, TV shows, images, or any other media
Reprints of material from other web sites (pay or free)

(Note: simply mentioning the word "download" is not a violation of TOS policy, given the number of legal download sites. Specific illegal download sites or methods must be mentioned for a violation to occur.)

    Impersonation

Users will be immediately banned (with any associated accounts) for impersonating other boards users by creating or using a message board account with a name clearly intended to impersonate, mock, or antagonize another user, falsely claiming to be another message board member.

    Offensive Posting

Posts of a patently offensive nature are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Using vulgar, profane, or sexually explicit language
Using race, religion, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, handicap, nationality, or gender as a means of insult
Using sexual preference terms as insult in any way, shape, or form
Using threatening, harassing, defamatory, hate-speech, or libellous language
Posting or requesting links to or material from pornographic, obscene, or hate-speech web sites
Posting links to web sites with potentially offensive content without a clear warning
Descriptions or details about any sexual act or sexual organs
Sexually suggestive or nearly nude images that are judged inappropriate by Moderators or Administrators
As a general guideline, this refers to images that would be censored on network television or in a daily newspaper

    Off-Topic Posting

The main purpose of the FilmSpot message boards is to provide discussion forums for films. Topicality is expected and will be enforced on all boards for contemporary and old films, as well as all general and special interest boards. On these boards, topics designed to get hundreds of posts with little or no content, topics that have nothing to do with the board's category, "secret base" type threads, and other "social" topics are not allowed. Other users are not on-topic in film and person forums. The manner in which a user chooses to post, any spelling or grammatical mistakes they make, their lack of experience, etc., is not on-topic.

    Other

Since we can't have a rule to cover everything, this is the rule to cover everything. These are public boards, so act like you would if you were in a public place. FilmSpot reserves the right to choose the guidelines of objectionable content based on its knowledge of users and company policy. These issues are left the individual moderators, but may include any material that is knowingly false or defamatory, misleading, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, racist, sexist, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy or that otherwise violates any law or encourages conduct constituting a criminal offence.

    Plot Spoilers/Revelations

Posting "spoilers" (critical plot details) or plot revelations about a film, TV show, time-delayed broadcast event, or other media in the title of a topic or in a message without a clear notice is prohibited. To discuss such information in a topic, users should leave the title of the topic as vague as possible, ensuring that no mention of the actual spoiler itself is included, and include a warning (i.e. "SPOILER") in the topic title. In a message post in a non-marked or otherwise unexpected topic, users should leave several blank lines in a post after a warning before revealing any vital plot information.

    Reviews

We've noticed a flood of reviews coming in lately for films that have not yet been screened. Either we have a growing number of users with psychic abilities or some folks out there are using the review form to speculate on what "might" happen in a film in order to gain points. Please be advised: Reviews of films that have not yet been released WILL BE DELETED. Posting these "speculation" reviews, and for that matter any other TOS violations associated with the reviews section, could wind up costing you points. So, please, if you want to write a review, watch the film first.

    Signatures

Signatures may not exceed 550 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall
Text based signatures may not exceed 14 lines
Signatures of an offensive nature are not allowed
Users are allowed to include one web site address in a signature.

    Trolling (Inciting Flames)

Posts intended mainly to annoy or offend other posters by going against the clear nature of a board or topic is not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Provoking other users to respond with flames
Provoking fans of a particular film or genre, especially on boards dedicated to that film or genre (i.e., "This movie suxx!!!")
    Making misleading topic titles
    Asking useless questions
    Posting false information as fact
    Threatening to report other users
Posting hostile and insulting comments about other users in blogs and non-film-related forums

    Unauthorized Access

Accessing or attempting any FilmSpot user account not belonging to the user in question without permission is prohibited. Accessing another user's account in this manner is grounds for immediate loss of all known accounts.

    Usernames, Profiles, and Forms

Violating any of rules with a username, any part of the user profile (signature, quote, e-mail, IM), or by feedback forms (such as the Mark for Moderation function) is considered a severe violation. If a Moderator or Administrator finds your Signature inappropriate and asks you to remove it, it must be removed.

    General Information About FilmSpot

    What is FilmSpot

FilmSpot is a free Web site dedicated to all things film. Owned by CNET Networks, FilmSpot features movie summaries, critical opinions, trailers, news, photos, actor and character guides, celebrity bios, theatrical and DVD release schedules, and box-office results. Fans can easily add their names to the site's credits via movie reviews (both text and video), ratings, film summaries, blogs, and forums.

    Who is CNET Networks?

You can find more information about CNET Networks here. FilmSpot is specifically part of the Entertainment division of CNET, which includes TV.com, GameSpot, GameFAQs, MP3.com and Metacritic.

How/Where do you get your information? How reliable is it?

Information posted on FilmSpot comes from a wide variety of sources. While we have a fairly large staff that actively adds content, the vast majority of information comes from our users. Currently, users can edit or add to film summaries and cast/crew credits, as well as contribute relevant external news links. We also occasionally receive content from production companies and studios themselves. Our accuracy is maintained by a strict moderation system that lets our experts check for poorly submitted data. However, given the evolving nature of a site as ambitious as FilmSpot, errors may occur, and we encourage you to report them.

    How does FilmSpot support itself?

FilmSpot is supported almost entirely through paid advertising on the site. Without these ads, FilmSpot would not be able to hire a staff and provide the user base with the attention, new features, editorial, and quality control that we currently provide. Note that CNET Networks takes a firm stance against ad obtrusiveness, and we try to make sure that we don't alienate our users with their incorporation into the site.

    Contributing to FilmSpot

What is FilmSpot's general submission/community philosophy?

FilmSpot aims to be the largest source of independent film information on the Internet. Realizing that our users might know more about what's happening on the big screens than we do, FilmSpot sports an easy-to-use user-submission system that lets registered users contribute and edit certain data on the site. FilmSpot also encourages an active user community with a levels system that rewards loyal users.

What are some important must-knows about contributing data to FilmSpot?

    * All content on the site is dynamic and should be considered subject to change. Information you submit could be improved, corrected, or downright rewritten by another user at a later date.

    * Because of the collaborative nature of content creation on our site, we may be unable to identify and remove your specific content if it was edited by other members of the community after being submitted.
    * Submissions go through a moderation process and do not appear live on the site immediately after submission.

    * We maintain the database independent of any studios or production companies. We do not fall to favoritism with submissions and do not cater to specific groups or people.

    * FilmSpot is not meant to be a resume service for people in the industry. Data from credited sources goes through the same submission process and is subject to the same terms as data from any other user.

    * FilmSpot uses a proprietary moderation system that grants trusted members of the community certain enhanced privileges. Continuing to submit quality data to the site over time can make it easier for you to get your submissions approved.

Can I cut and paste information from other sites and contribute it to a guide?

Submitting summaries copied from ANY webpage is not allowed. This goes for all sites, including IMDB or any "official" film or fan sites. The word "official" does not mean that it's OK to copy. Even though you are copying the "official" summary, you do not have permission to use it, nor does CNET (sometimes a network may specifically ask us to post a summary which they have already written, but this is rare). (Check out the US Copyright Office website for more details, if you are not sure about copyright laws and what this means).

Can I add a link to a page from another site outside of FilmSpot?

Yes, provided you submit them to "News." This feature can be found on the summary page of every guide next to the text “Add Headline.” This is the ONLY place to submit links to pages outside of FilmSpot; you can NOT post links to pages outside of FilmSpot anywhere else in the guides. Links to pages within FilmSpot are allowed anywhere in the guides.

How do I submit a new film to FilmSpot?

We are hoping to implement this feature for users soon.

How do I request deletion of a film or person guide from FilmSpot?

You should use post in this forum to request the deletion of a show or person guide.

How do I submit new information to an existing film on FilmSpot?

There are “Add [information]” buttons under every section of a film page that is open to user contribution. By clicking on this button, you can find the forms specific to the information you would like to submit. In certain cases, specific data--like film images, news, or stars--may be locked, with access limited to FilmSpot staff.

How do I add new DVD releases to a movie or edit an existing DVD's information?

FilmSpot DVD information comes from our sister site DVDSpot, a free Web-based service that lets users keep track of DVDs they own, rent, watch, and loan. Sign up for an account with DVDspot and use their comprehensive user submission forms to edit media information on both sites!

How do I make changes to incorrect, existing data on FilmSpot?

Information that can be changed by users will have a small "edit" link listed after the entry. Clicking it will jump you to a pre-filled form that lets you edit the current data. Certain data, such as images and trailers, is often locked, with access limited to FilmSpot staff.

How long do submissions normally take to reach the live site?

Times vary per film, per data submitted. In most cases, moderation time doesn't exceed one week and is often much shorter, but we almost always have a backlog of data to process.

A contribution I submitted was rejected! What's the deal?

There are many reasons a submission is rejected. Most of them have nothing to do with our thinking your submission was incorrect. We process hundreds of submissions each day, and a portion of those submissions are duplicates. This is especially true for current, “Now Playing” films. In such cases we mostly take the best bits of a couple of user submissions and push that to the live site, and then we reject the duplicates. Other reasons for rejection include:

Bad Grammar/Spelling – We’re not going to reject an entry for simple grammatical errors but please, PLEASE, write complete sentences. “Is a fan of Dave Mathews” or, “likes cake”, are not complete sentences. Also, the moderators don’t have time to spell check your work so please take the time to check your own spelling.

Copy and Paste – You cannot copy and paste information from IMDB, or Yahoo, or any other site; that material is copyrighted. Write your own bio or description, or paraphrase one that’s already been written -- get creative. Do not copy someone else’s work.

Links/Email Addresses – You cannot include links to commercial websites or personal websites and we would rather you did not include your own or someone else’s email address.

Pictures – Most of the pictures users submit to FilmSpot are copyrighted and cannot be posted without permission. The pictures you see on FilmSpot have been posted by FilmSpot with permission from the owners. Simple rule: don’t post pictures.

False Information – Some users submit cast or crew information from memory without bothering to check the accuracy of their information. This causes problems and it’s a big headache for the people who have to go back and fix everything. Please be certain of the information you submit, and provide a source whenever possible.

Hearsay/Gossip – Let's leave statements like, “has a thing for Lindsay Lohan”, and, “living with mystery man in Miami” to the tabloids. We’d like to stick to the facts.

Duplicate Entries – Sometimes it can’t be avoided, we understand that there’s a lot of folks out there and there is bound to be some overlapping. All we ask is that you take a minute to check to see if the information you’re intending to post has already been posted.

Nonsense – Some examples of nonsense would be: “she’s sooooooo hottt!!!”; “I would like to go on a date with her!!!”; “is the best actor ever!!!!” This information isn’t valuable to anyone and really doesn’t have any place in the guides.

What is “gaming” and what is the penalty for it?

Gaming basically means cheating. Someone “gaming the system” might submit false information or delete and re-post information over and over again; they might add a comma to a summary that needs no comma, or add an alias that does not exist. Sometimes someone will add one piece of information to a form that allows you to add several pieces of information, one at a time, in order to gain as many points from that form as possible. The goal is to accumulate as many points as they can without adding any useful information or doing any real work. “Gaming” can cause a huge backlog of pending submissions wasting the staff’s time, and delaying good submissions from being accepted in a timely fashion. Anyone found to be “gaming” will first be given sufficient warnings and then dealt with according to the decision of the staff.

How do I add credits for an actor/actress on FilmSpot?

FilmSpot is a film-specific, not an actor-specific, database. This means that all links between an actor and a film happen at the film level. For example, if you noticed that Julia Roberts’s credits did not include Erin Brockovich, you would need to submit her as an actor on the Erin Brockovich page, not the Julia Roberts page.

Is there any way to track submissions I've made to the site?

In your user profile, under your Contributions tab, there is a section titled "Submissions." This section provides a list of all submissions you have made to the site as well as the current status of each submission. There are three submission-status categories: pending, approved, and rejected. Any comments associated with a submission are also displayed. In addition, private messages (PMs) are sent to your inbox any time an action is taken on your submissions.

I made a mistake in a submission. Is there any way to correct it before it goes live?

Not currently. We may catch your mistake, but if it gets past us you are more than welcome to submit a new entry if you think it should not have gone through.

How do I delete information on the site?

Data that can be edited by users will have a small "edit" link listed after the entry. Clicking it will jump you to a pre-filled form that lets you edit the current data, including deleting the information. All other deletions are handled by the staff and can be requested by sending them a private message. You can usually find a list of staff members by checking the message boards, which update more often than this FAQ.

    Contributor Scoring

Are all submissions scored the same?

No, certain submissions are worth more than others and will therefore add more to your contributor score. It's FilmSpot’s belief that some information can take a lot longer to write and is more valuable to the average FilmSpot visitor than something that can be submitted quickly. We recognize these differences and weigh our scoring accordingly. The specifics on scoring, though, are purposely hidden to allow us to tweak our scoring system when necessary for balance.

    What constitutes “active”?

These are things a user can do to gain points and be considered active on the site:
    • Simply visiting the site each day.
    • Posting on the message boards or sending PMs to other users.
    • Contributing new content to a show or actor.
    • Writing reviews.
    • Updating your profile by posting on your blog, adding a banner, making comments, or adding movies to your "my favorites" list.
    • Commenting on news stories and other users' blogs.

Specific Forms and Formatting for Submitted Content

What are some must-knows about formatting content on FilmSpot?

    • The HTML allowed is extremely limited and mostly used for font decoration.
    • All forms will process your paragraph separations automatically. There is no need to use br or p tags.
    • You should mimic the formatting forbidden

    The following HTML tags are allowed: < b >, < strong >, < em >, < i >, < br >, and < p >. You can learn more about HTML here.

    The Film Summary Form

The film summary includes all the core information about a film. Please take special care when editing this form, because it affects sorting and display across the entire site.

Best Practices for the Film Summary

    • Always use your opening paragraph to quickly summarize the premise of the film. Since this information is all that will show up on a search or in a summary on another guide, it is the most important part of your summary.
    • Please keep personal opinions out of the summary. Summaries should be fact-based and as neutral as possible.
    • Do not include spoilers anywhere in the film summary.

    The Credits Form

The cast and crew credits are for actors or actresses and people involved in the production of the film.

    User Profiles, Friends, and Reviews

    What is a user profile?

A user profile is "home base" for any registered user. On your profile page you can add to your blog, find your previously written reviews, check your contribution history, find updates about your favorite films, and manage your friends list.

What are "my favorites" and lists?

FilmSpot lets you create lists to organize your favorite (or not so favorite) films and personalities, which you can easily present to other users of the site, including your friends. In addition to your basic favorites, you can write descriptions for the lists, like, “Films I’m Dying to See,” or “Best Movies for a Second Date,” and explain why you included a film or person on the list. On every film or actor page you'll find an "add to my list" or "track this person" button that will add the respective film/person to your chosen list. Doing so will also make your favorite films appear in the quick-jump "my favorites" dropdown in the top right portion of any page you visit on FilmSpot.

Can I use a different email address but still keep the same profile name?

Yes, to change the email address associated with your user account go to the “Profile Summary” section under the "Preferences" tab when logged into your profile. Simply type in the updated email address and hit "Apply Changes". You will then receive a confirmation email with a link to authorize this change. Once you click on the link and confirm that the new address listed is correct you are all set!

What are friends? How does the friends system work?

FilmSpot lets you add other users from the site to your "friends" list. Adding a friend is as simple as clicking the "track this person" button on any user's profile. Doing so lets you receive updates when that user updates his or her blog, posts a new review, or makes a post on the forums. Simply go to the "Friends" tab in your profile page to see what your friends have been up to lately on the site. If for any reason you need to remove friends from your friends list, simply use the checkboxes to remove them.

Can I make my profile private? Why does the site show my birth date and location? I don't want people knowing that!

First off, your birthday and location show up only when you're viewing your own profile. No other user can see that information, and you cannot view that information about other users. CNET never shares your personal data with third parties. Check our privacy policy for more information.

If you still wish to keep your profile private from all others, simply open your “Preferences” panel, click on “Site Settings” and check the “Private” button next to “Who can see my profile.” This will block all users from seeing anything in your profile. You can also manage other privacy settings from this section, including making only your friends able to see your profile, and having other users see when you are online.

How do I write a user review? How long does it take for them to show up?

Any registered user can write a film or actor review on FilmSpot. Simply click the "Submit Review" button on near the bottom of the page. Reviews show up immediately on the site after you hit the submit button. All reviews need an associated rating and must meet the minimum word count. Instructions can be found on the review form.

Is it OK for reviews to include spoilers?

Yes, spoilers are OK, but we ask that you put a spoiler warning in before the spoiler, like ***SPOILER*** and then some space, or something similar.

Where can I find reviews I've previously written?

Within your profile, select the "Contributions" tab and then select "Reviews." There you should see a listing of every review you've written. Your most recent reviews also show up on the front page of your user profile.

How do I send A PM (Private Message)?

Our Private Message (PM) system is basically like email, but can only be sent between registered users on FilmSpot, TV.com, Gamespot.com and MP3.com websites. When logged into your profile, click on the button “My Inbox” (located below your user Level on the right-hand side of the page), then click on the “Send Message” tab. A message box will appear. Simply fill in the profile name of the user you wish to contact, write a subject and your message in the marked fields and hit the “Send Message” button.

How do I add/change the ICON on my profile?

When logged into your profile, click on the tab “Preferences”. Click on the “Image Preferences” button, then hit “Change” below your picture or avatar. There you have a list of the current icons available to choose from. You can also upload your own icon just as long as it's not offensive and it's 80 x 80, 19K maximum in size.

How do I add/change the banner on my profile?

When logged into your profile, click on the tab “Preferences”. Click on the “Blog Preferences” button, then scroll down to the field marked “Header Image URL.” Insert the URL link to an image measuring 432 pixels by 155 pixels (50k max), or upload your own.

    User Leveling and Emblems

What are user levels? How do I gain levels?

Levels are a fun and fair way to reward and identify prominent community members. Put simply, leveling is a scorecard that marks the loyalty of a user to FilmSpot and the value of that user's contributions. Note that each level is harder to attain than the last one. Users can gain points toward a new level by taking a variety of actions on the site. These include but are not limited to:

    • Simply visiting the site each day.
    • Posting on the message boards or sending PMs to other users.
    • Contributing new content to a film or actor.
    • Writing reviews.
    • Updating your profile by posting on your blog, adding a banner, making comments, or adding films to your lists.
    • Commenting on news stories and other users' blogs.

    Are levels used for anything?

Yes, we use levels as a gateway to certain special privileges for high-ranked users, which will be unveiled soon!

Can you lose levels? Is there a level cap?

The only time users can lose a level is if they are specifically singled out for abuse of the system as a disciplinary measure. This happens so rarely that these users are personally notified. If you do notice your level going down, please jump on the support forum and let one of the staff members know immediately. There is a cap on total points you can earn in any given day. This exists as a precautionary measure to limit abusive users who may attempt to game the points system. This means that if you exceed the cap, your points for that work done after you hit the cap will not be reflected in your level percentage, but they will count toward your total contribution points toward a guide - so, your work toward a film/person guide is not altered in any way.

Why does it say I'm a mogwai?

Individual levels are associated with a "rank." The level 1 rank is a "mogwai," while level 2 is "2 Dollars." Each level has a unique identifier that is an allusion to some part of film history. We'll let you figure them out!

    What are emblems?

Emblems are essentially graphic merit badges awarded to users who achieve a certain accomplishment. For example, when users have 20 friends, they get the convivial "butterfly" icon. Not all emblems are so simple to achieve. At any time you can roll over any emblem with your mouse to get a description.
